Morocco Taxi Fares

One of the best ways to get around any new place you visit is by taxi. The convenience of being transported from one tourist attraction to another in relative comfort makes taxis a top choice for many travelers. Instead of worrying about directions or traffic, you can relax and enjoy your journey. In fact, more and more people now prefer booking a private taxi from the airport to their hotel, avoiding the crowded, slow-moving transfer buses offered by tour operators, and starting their holiday in comfort.

Getting around Morocco is no exception. With the large number of taxi drivers and the variety of vehicle types available, traveling by taxi is easier than ever.

In cities like Marrakech and Casablanca two of the most popular destinations in Morocco you’ll see small beige “petit taxis” for city travel, each marked with a meter and a rooftop sign. In other areas, taxi colors and sizes may vary, but they are always clearly marked to stand out from regular cars.

As in most parts of the world, you can simply raise your hand to flag down a taxi in Morocco. If you’d rather not do that, you can head to a taxi stand (commonly found near popular areas and hotels), or ask your hotel reception to call one for you.

Don’t be surprised if your taxi picks up another passenger during the ride or if there’s already someone inside when it stops. In many Moroccan cities, especially the larger ones, it’s common to share taxis—especially when traveling short distances.

How much does Moroccan taxi cost and are there any surcharges?

Morocco is a diverse country made up of vibrant cities, coastal towns, and rural villages, each with its own local taxi regulations and fare structures, so prices can vary from one region to another. Generally, there is a minimum fare for short taxi rides, usually ranging between 5 MAD and 15 MAD (approximately €0.50 to €1.40). Beyond that, the fare is calculated using a meter based on the distance traveled. The cost per kilometer also varies but typically falls between 1.50 MAD and 5 MAD (around €0.15 to €0.45 per km).

It’s important to note that in some Moroccan cities especially larger ones like Casablanca or Marrakech taxi fares may increase during nighttime hours, usually from midnight to 6:00 AM. Additional charges may also apply for pickups at airports, train stations, or bus terminals, as well as for transporting luggage or additional passengers.
